Happy Thursday! Today I have a review for a timely read, Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win, published by Simon Schuster on July 23.
My Thoughts:
Charlotte Walsh Likes To Win by Jo Piazza
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
4 brave stars to Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I noticed this book when a blogger friend, Rachel at In Between Book Pages (see her amazing review here: Rachel’s review), was reading it. Her thoughts on Charlotte’s story enticed me to pick it up.
Winning? Is it something we all love, at least at one time or another? What messages do we receive about having it all and winning at life? Are we told that we can’t have it all?
There is much to admire about Charlotte Walsh. She is a go-getter who wants and believes she can absolutely have it all, including a political position, a loving marriage, three young daughters, and total happiness.
Charlotte is running for office in a most important Senate race, one that will determine which party controls Congress. She is determined to win and inspired to make change happen, so she leaves her high-powered job and returns to her hometown in Pennsylvania to run for office.
Charlotte is quickly shocked by the treatment she receives from her political opponent, the press, and even her peers. Her personal life also becomes overbearing because she is so focused on work, she does not see her husband’s growing resentment.
Next comes a scandal that puts Charlotte in the crosshairs threatening to not only lose her campaign, but her marriage and family, too.
The suspense builds as Charlotte is on the trail to victory, and important issues including political ambition, specifically related to women, as well as the differentiated treatment of women and men in politics, and the sacrifices a wife and mother has to make to truly have it all.
Overall, I found Charlotte’s story to be consuming, timely, and provocative. While it is a fictionalized account, I left this book with a deeper understanding of what it potentially requires for a woman to take on the challenge of running for office.
Thank you to Simon Schuster for the complimentary copy to review. All opinions are my own. Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win is available now!
Synopsis:

People: “Best Summer Books”
PopSugar: “25 Best New Books to Put in Your Beach Bag This Summer”
Refinery29: “Brilliant Books to Bring to the Beach This Summer”
Vulture: “18 Books We Can’t Wait to Read This Summer”From Jo Piazza, the bestselling author of The Knock Off, How to Be Married, and Fitness Junkie, comes an exciting, insightful novel about what happens when a woman wants it all—political power, a happy marriage, and happiness—but isn’t sure just how much she’s willing to sacrifice to get it.
Charlotte Walsh is running for Senate in the most important race in the country during a midterm election that will decide the balance of power in Congress. Still reeling from a presidential election that shocked and divided the country and inspired by the chance to make a difference, she’s left behind her high-powered job in Silicon Valley and returned, with her husband Max and their three young daughters, to her downtrodden Pennsylvania hometown to run in the Rust Belt state.
Once the campaign gets underway, Charlotte is blindsided by just how dirty her opponent is willing to fight, how harshly she is judged by the press and her peers, and how exhausting it becomes to navigate a marriage with an increasingly ambivalent and often resentful husband. When the opposition uncovers a secret that could threaten not just her campaign but everything Charlotte holds dear, she has to decide just how badly she wants to win and at what cost.
A searing, suspenseful story of political ambition, marriage, class, sexual politics, and infidelity, Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win is an insightful portrait of what it takes for a woman to run for national office in America today. In a dramatic political moment like no other with more women running for office than ever before, Jo Piazza’s novel is timely, engrossing, and perfect for readers on both sides of the aisle.
Excellent review, Jenn! This isn’t normally a book I’d pick up, but it still sounds like a pretty good read. Glad you enjoyed it! I definitely think that winning and success is something highly cherished in our western culture. I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes! 😁❤😘

Thanks, favorite M! I think the theme about a woman trying to have it all and finding that comes with more than what you were hoping for is a little more relatable than the winning a political race aspect (I should have highlighted more of the former in my review, I think?). You are absolutely right about our culture emphasizing winning, and I would not want to be in her shoes either. I felt so overwhelmed on her behalf! This book really surprised me in a great way. Happy Thursday! 😘 xo

Great review! Sounds intriguing. I don’t understand why anyone runs for office these days with all the shenanigans that go on! Only people who’ve led really boring lives are going to get through it without some scandal or another turning up… 😱

Thanks, FF! So true- everyone has lived a little! Thank goodness we have caring people who do run for these offices, though. I would absolutely vote for Charlotte! 😉

Thanks, Sus! It is working its way around and for good reason I think! So much to talk about within these pages! Today is our first hot day with no chance of rain since that front came in, and everything was already wilted! I thought I could take one more day off from watering! Hope you are staying cool! 💗 xo
Oh wait, one more thing I wanted to tell you. So somehow I preordered a copy of All Your Perfects that was left pending forever….and ever….and I am really not sure what happened. So I cancelled that order, and my book will be here by Saturday. Now to work that one in! 💕

Wonderful review! I’ve really wanted to read this one but knew I wouldn’t have it reviewed in time, so I stayed away, lol. I’ll still read it though and am so glad you enjoyed it! It sounds really fascinating! 😊

Thanks, Stephanie! I piled on myself and picked this one up about a week ago? It was a read now, and I just could not resist after Rachel’s review. I admire your restraint, and I need to learn some! Although I am slowly, very slowly, requesting less and catching up. I’m pretty sure you’ll love this one. Charlotte is a character you just fall for, so relatable, and especially with all that you manage. I hope everything’s been going well with your planning and that you are feeling well. 💗

You’re welcome! I did see it as a read now and was sooo tempted! I just knew I would never get it reviewed since I’m just finally getting around to reviewing Ghosted a little bit ago when I meant to do that on Monday and have 4 reviews sitting in my drafts (with only a sentence or two because I have the worst writer’s block in the world) and 4 more on top of that to write, ugh. I’ve got 2 books releasing Tues and hopefully I will get to them as planned. Oh thanks, I think it’s less restraint than knowing if I request I will stress out knowing I will have to write the review, haha. You’ll do it though!! I’m excited to read this one…I think I will use my audible credit on it 🙂 Thank you! I’ve planned my daughter;s homeschool curriculum up to Christmas break, so I guess that’s something although I tweak it every day! Still planning school stuff though. I’m hanging in there. My lupus is flaring up, so I head back to Raleigh next week to see my rheumatologist. Yippee. It feels like it’s always something! Oh well! That’s life! 🙂 I hope you’re well!! ❤

That is wonderful that you have half the year planned, even if you are tweaking a little. Sometimes getting started is the hardest part, and you are well beyond that! I am sorry to hear about the lupus flaring. I hope the doctor can help you with that. Will you go back to PI after the doctor? I think/hope this will be a great for a credit. It’s so smart and witty. I hope you have a great Friday with wonderful weather! 💕

Thanks! I’ve got 15 weeks planned..that takes it to Christmas break (I’m starting break the week before Christmas so she can have 2 full weeks off while I’m on break too..we both will need it,lol). So I have 20 more weeks to plan, but I think I have it in my head. I’m doing a classical education for her, so literature based curriculum that I can handle! Maybe that’s why it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Thank you! I think the heat has a lot to do with it. Summer has never been my friend as far as my symptoms are concerned. I hope she can help. I’m seeing a lupus specialist at Duke now. I don’t think I’ll go back to PI alone. We all might go back for one last weekend before school, but I’m physically exhausted and think I’ll just stay home even though the beach has been mentally relaxing. Fantastic! I look forward to listening to it!! You too!! 💗

Excellent review, Jennifer! 😊 I admit this is one book I didn’t expect myself to like this much. The issues Jo Piazza presented are all timely & relevant, doesn’t matter where you are in the world.
Also, I’m all too happy you to add more books to your TBR. Haha! 😁

Great review! I read The Knockoff with my book group last year, and we all loved it. Such great women’s voices, and despite the humor, it also had a lot of important things to say about women in the workplace. This books sounds great — I’ll check it out!

Lovely review Jennifer! I don’t know why but I get a feeling of a children’s book out of this one, something like a lesson in you can’t always win. Definitely completely different that the book you described in your review. LOL

I love that this book also seems to show the detriment to trying so hard to win! You can “win” without giving up everything else, because if you lose everything… Is that really a win? Sometimes a balance can also be a win for everyone! Great review!

Thanks, Nicole! Yes, you are absolutely right. It’s all about how you personally define what “winning” is. I love that! There are so many messages here and so much to think about. ♥️
