Shabby Sunday is a weekly meme created by my dear friend, Mischenko, at ReadRantRockandRoll to highlight cherished vintage books in her own collection. Please check out a recent Shabby Sunday post of hers here: Shabby Sunday.
I moved frequently, especially during childhood and college/grad school, and it was only recently that I found a stash of my well-loved books.
My next Shabby Sunday share is one of my very first books, and oh my, is this one shabby! First published in 1976, I obtained it several years after that. 😉 My mom noted inside the lovely people who gifted this, two of our close neighbors.
I was shocked to see that the cost of this book was a mere ninety-five cents! I had a picture taken when I was two holding another kitten book, but so far, no luck finding it. I asked my mom why I had several cat books and only a couple about dogs (future Shabby Sunday post!) because we had more dogs than cats in our family, and she said it was because she prefers cats!
We actually had a Siamese cat named Prissy, and I remember this picture (left) looking like her.
My mom wrote on the inside flap my name and the date, and I was about 1.5 years old. It is a treasure of a book and well-worn from the love. I must have carried it everywhere. To this day, I still love cats and all animals, really.
Thanks for reading my Shabby Sunday post inspired by Mischenko! Do you hold on to shabby, vintage books? Do you have any favorites from your childhood? Happy Reading! Jennifer THR
I don’t have any shabby vintage books. 😔

Aw, Laurie. If you happen to like shabby books, you can look for them in secondhand shops and thrift stores, used bookstores, etc. I know Mischenko has bought a few of hers, and I have others friends who have, too. 😊 I hope you have a great Sunday, Laurie! 💕

I swear we might have that one or maybe a newer edition. I’m going to have to hunt for it. Thanks so much for sharing this, Jenn. You do such a beautiful job on your posts. ❤🧡❤ xoxo

Aw, you know how much I love animals, kittens and cats, especially! If you are able to hunt it down, I would love to see! I noticed on GR that it was quite popular for “our generation!” Thanks, favorite M! It is my absolute pleasure to take part in your wonderful meme! 💗 xo

Cats are way better than dogs! (My cats made me say that…) I don’t have many books from childhood – my mother was terrible for getting rid of things as soon as we lost interest in them. I managed to hang on to Anne of Green Gables though – I think she knew her life wouldn’t be worth living if she gave that one away! 😉

Cats are pretty darn special and, unless they are aging, like my sweet girl, typically really easy to care for! We used the library frequently when I was growing up, so I am pretty sure I only read Anne from the library. I would love to have a shabby copy of that in my collection. I think you have a real treasure!

This is SO cute Jen! I still have my very first book, it’s a little hardback with really thick pages a bit like how this one looks? It’s called Teddy and it’s all about a teddy bear who goes out walking in the rain and is trying not to get wet. It’s adorable and I’ll never get rid of it. 😍

That does sound adorable, Beth! I would love to see pics of your Teddy someday! My first book was actually Pat the Bunny! We have that somewhere- need to find it- it is in horrible condition! Thanks for telling me about your Teddy book! 💕

That’s actually not too bad of shape for being so young when you were attached to it. But it’s cute kitties so of course it would be a favorite! 🙂

Thanks, Carrie! You are right, too, because it was a soft book, so it really could have been torn up. For some reason, it’s one I actually did not write my name all over, which I did on many other books. 😂
