Happy Thursday and welcome to my stop on the blog tour for I Do Not Trust You by the dynamic duo, Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz! Thank you to Wednesday Books for the invitation, and I am excited to share my review of this adventurous book!
My Thoughts:
Wow, M. “M” is short for Memphis, our first main character. She is assertive and overwhelmingly intelligent with savant-type knowledge in certain areas. She speaks several languages, and she knows martial arts (of course!). Overall, I loved her.
Ashwin “Ash” Sood is a little too preppy for M. He is also a member of an ancient cult. Did I lose you?
Ash rocks M’s world by telling her that not only is her late father not dead, he also urgently needs her help.
M and Ash team up to travel the world in search of the holy grail that will save M’s father. This is where the magic happens as the book takes on an adventurous feel reminiscent of Indiana Jones. The first half of the adventure is a tad more enthralling than the second, but my interest was held throughout.
If you couldn’t tell already, I adored M, and Ash with his baggage and tender heart won me over as well. The angst and tension build in the story as their feelings towards each other grow.
I Do Not Trust You is a different sort of read for me, and it left me wishing I read this genre more often. I will definitely check out this duo’s first book.
Thank you to Wednesday Books/St. Martin’s Press for the invitation to join in on the blog tour and for the complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own.
About the Book:
Praise for the Book and Authors:
“Memphis is a searingly intelligent and endearingly gutsy female protagonist, and the evolution of her relationship with Ash unravels both artfully and believably… [an] entertaining novel.”—Kirkus Reviews
“[A] white-knuckle read that pushes envelopes and makes the reader question everything.”—USA Today’s Happily Ever After blog on Sanctuary Bay
“A quickly captivating account of an outsider’s new life inside a world of prestige, pleasure, and pain and her struggle to find acceptance and herself and to survive.”
—School Library Journal on Sanctuary Bay
“This mash-up of private-school lit meets mystery novel meets conspiracy theory should keep readers guessing as the horror continues to mount.”—Booklist on Sanctuary Bay
Synopsis:
Memphis “M” Engle is stubborn to a fault, graced with an almost absurd knowledge of long lost languages and cultures, and a heck of an opponent in a fight. In short: she’s awesome.
Ashwin Sood is a little too posh for her tastes, a member of an ancient cult (which she’s pretty sure counts for more than one strike against him), and has just informed Memphis that her father who she thought was dead isn’t and needs her help.
From the catacombs of Paris to lost temples in the sacred forests, together they crisscross the globe, searching for the pieces of the one thing that might save her father. But the closer they come to saving him—and the more they fall for one another—the closer they get to destroying the world.
About the Authors:
LAURA J. BURNS and MELINDA METZ have written many books for teens and middle-grade readers, including Sanctuary Bay, Crave, and Sacrifice, as well as the Edgar-nominated mystery series Wright and Wong. They have also written for the TV shows ROSWELL, 1-800-MISSING, and THE DEAD ZONE. Laura lives in New York and Melinda lives in North Carolina, but really they mostly live on email, where they do most of their work together.
Have you read I Do Not Trust You, or is it on your TBR? Do you have any recommendations for similar books? Happy Reading! ~ Jennifer THR

Great review! Just heard about this book on another blog the other day and was sad to see it was no longer available for request. But, then I was cleaning up my email and found I had missed an email from the publisher offering it up, and the widget still worked! Definitely looking forward to this one. There just aren’t enough adventure books out there. 🙂

Thank you, Myndi! You are so right- we need more adventure books! They feel nostalgic because of all the great children’s classics adventures. I’m happy your widget still worked, and I can’t wait to see what you think!

Thank you, Rose! ♥️ The winds are really picking up here, but we are doing well so far. I lived in Columbia for four years, and I’m thinking you’ll need to watch for the flooding where you are? Be extra careful and stay safe!

It’s really tricky when there are 2 more more writers involved in a book. I somehow a little hesitant to read books of this kind…Maybe it’s just me being a ‘traditional’ reader 😀 Love the cover, though! 😀

I understand, Jee! I thought the writing was seamless- I couldn’t tell it was by two authors, but the genre was a stretch for me. Isn’t that cover pretty! ♥️
