TGIF, book friends! Today I have a review of an upcoming Sourcebooks Landmark publication, The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. Several of you read this novel and LOVED it, so I succumbed to temptation!
My Thoughts:
This book. Wow. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a book you have to give a chance, and if you do, the pay-off is immense if mysteries are your cuppa.
I’m offering a basic synopsis because it is best to go into this one with all doors of possibility wide open.
Evelyn has been murdered before, countless times. Her parents are throwing a gala, where she will be murdered again. Luckily, Aiden is tasked with solving her murder.
Evelyn’s story is detail-laden. Knowing that, it is on my short list of best mysteries because of its originality and refreshing storytelling.
As I mentioned above, ample patience is required. It is not a book you will be able to speed through, but if it clicks with you like it did with me, it will be a compulsive, addictive, and impossible to put down.
I spent most of the read analyzing and using my noggin trying to piece everything together, and I LOVED THAT. The writing is comforting and warm in its heaviness, and overall, I found The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle to be brilliantly plotted.
Thank you to Sourcebooks for the complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own.
Synopsis:
How do you stop a murder that’s already happened?
At a gala party thrown by her parents, Evelyn Hardcastle will be killed–again. She’s been murdered hundreds of times, and each day, Aiden Bishop is too late to save her. Doomed to repeat the same day over and over, Aiden’s only escape is to solve Evelyn Hardcastle’s murder and conquer the shadows of an enemy he struggles to even comprehend–but nothing and no one are quite what they seem.
Deeply atmospheric and ingeniously plotted, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a highly original debut that will appeal to fans of Kate Atkinson and Agatha Christie.
Have you read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and if so, what do you think? Happy Reading! ~ Jennifer THR
I can’t wait to read this book!

I DNFed the book and I love mysteries. Just wasn’t my kind of book at all.

Hi Caidyn, I am sorry I am just seeing your post. WP had put it in spam. I completely understand about your thoughts on the book. It seems to be that it either works completely for some or just plain not at all. No middle road really.

When I first heard about this book, I thought the plot sounds extreme complicated with the recurring incident. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed reading this book though. Great review!

Thanks, Sus! YES! I thought of Groundhog Day and meant to mention it! A Groundhog Day murder mystery! We are doing well here- high winds and rain, and my yard is a mess already, but we are safe and have power, so all is well. ♥️ I hope you are having a lovely Friday, my friend! 💗

We must have chatted about it because I’m sitting here trying to write my review right now for Tues, LOL. I can’t think of what to say without giving the plot away. But thank you….I think I posted about it in a WWW post when I was still doing those perhaps 😉 But I’m always glad when I can influence you to pick up a book to read!! We usually like the same ones. 🙂 It definitely is! ❤ I want to see what the author comes up with next time!! xxx

😂 You are right- even if we just chat about it, I commit it to memory! Especially because we like the same books. 💗 It was a difficult review to write! Yes, I thought the same- what will he write next?! I’ll be reading it!

That is too funny! I still haven’t finished the review, hahaha! No wonder I never get my reviews written. It usually takes me 5 or 6 hrs to get one down on paper anyway since I have to write and delete and rewrite and do it all over again. And then I got sidetracked and started writing 3 different reviews that I still need to post…and they aren’t done yet either! My writing habits are awful. Oh, I hope he’s writing something new for next year!! ❤

I totally understand, Sheila! I had the Kindle version, so it softened it for me, but I am intimidated by long books, too. When you are reading it, it feels dense because of the details, but not because of the length- if that helps? I hope you enjoy it, too!

Haha no just checked our list 😂 we have Elmet, Homegoing, The House At The Edge Of The World and Jane Steele, so far!! Let me know when you’re free to start Elmet, I’m pretty busy for the rest of the month but can totally do October if that suits? I’m patiently waiting for Evelyn Hardcastle to come out in paperback in the UK as I’ve banned myself from buying anymore hardbacks! 😆

Thanks for checking our list! I am so excited! I can start in October, but after the 25th if that’s ok? Then, my schedule is really opening up again, thank goodness. Let’s get it on the calendar! Yay to Evelyn in paperback! ♥️

Just started this last night, and I could tell straightaway it was going to be a good fit for me. It’s very atmospheric, the premise is definitely my kind of intriguing, and I love that we start off a wee bit confused, clarity being sprinkled like breadcrumbs. Great review!
