TGIF, everyone! First Line Fridays is a fun way to share from books on your TBR.
Today my first line is from a book I am currently reading:
James Lionel Falconer, commonly called Jimmy by everyone except his grandmother, was out of breath. He came to a sudden stop in the middle of the road going toward Camden Lock. The wheelbarrow he was pushing was heavy and grew heavier by the minute, at least so it seemed to him. He rested for a few seconds, leaning against the wheelbarrow, endeavoring to catch his breath.
I wonder what was in that wheelbarrow? Stay tuned because I’m taking part in the blog tour on December 17!
Synopsis from Goodreads:
From New York Times bestselling author Barbara Taylor Bradford comes the first book in a stunning new historical saga.
Victorian England is a country of sharp divides between rich and poor, but James Lionel Falconer is everything a self-made man should be: handsome, ambitious, charming, and brimming with self-confidence. Even as a boy working in his father’s market stall in Camden, he was determined to become a merchant prince. Through hard work and a single-minded determination, James rises quickly through the ranks, with a loving wife, devoted children, and a lofty position in the Malvern & Malvern Company. But when back-to-back tragedies strike the Falconer home, shattering this idyllic life, it seems as though James might never recover his former glory…until a royal summons gives him the chance to prove that he truly is a master of the game.
The first book in an expansive and intricately detailed new historical fiction series from master storyteller Barbara Taylor Bradford, Master of the Game is filled with drama, intrigue, and Bradford’s trademark cast of compelling characters.
Make sure to check out my friend, Mack’s, First Line Friday post to see what she’s reading this weekend!

Add me to the list of it having been years since I read this author. This one does look good.
My first line of a book I will start soon (maybe today) is:
“Behold! The Big Easy in all it’s wicked splendor!”
from the book November Road by Lou Berney

Happy Friday!
My first lines come from The Mother In Law by Sally Hepworth………
I am folding laundry at my dining room table when the police car pulls up. There’s no fanfare— no sirens or flashing lights— yet that little niggle starts in the pit of my stomach, Mother Nature’s warning that all is not well.
Have an awesome weekend and stay warm! Happy reading!😊📚💕

It does sound intriguing, especially because it’s not a thriller. Thanks, Angela, and happy weekend! ♥️

I bet it’s a corpse he’s going to dump in the lock! 😉
Here’s mine, from the book I’m just about to start:
Once upon a time, it matters little when, and in stalwart England, it matters little where, a fierce battle was fought. It was fought upon a long summer day when the waving grass was green. Many a wild flower, formed by the Almighty Hand to be a perfumed goblet for the dew, felt its enamelled cup filled high with blood that day and, shrinking, dropped.
Hahaha – it’s the next of my Dickens’ Christmas book reads – doesn’t sound much like festive fun from that, eh?

Yeah, hopefully it gets more festive as you go along! 😂 Hmm…I wonder if you are right about the corpse!
