Happy Friday, all! Today I am super excited to share my review of another book I group read, Untouchable by Jayne Ann Krentz, publishing on January 8 by Berkley!
My Thoughts:
Untouchable is my first book by Jayne Ann Krentz, and it’s the third book in an established series.
Jack Lancaster is a consultant to the FBI, and he loves the challenge of cold cases, especially ones involving arson, as he himself is a survivor of a horrendous fire. Jack is uniquely able to relate to a killer and that’s how he solves his crimes, but sometimes that reliability bleeds over into his personal life.
Jack seeks help for his “gift” from Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist, who always brings him back from the dark.
Quinton Zane is an arch nemesis of Jack’s, and Zane is now hunting Jack. He is a cult leader who killed the parents of the children in a foster family, and Jack is one of the foster children for which he is searching.
Jack and Winter are two relatable and strong characters to get behind. I also enjoyed the premise of the story, and especially how well Zane, the villain, was drawn. Untouchable is an easy-to-read and engaging novel, and I think I would have gotten a tad more out of it had I read the first two books, though it was a perfectly suitable read in its own right.
Thanks to Berkley for the complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Synopsis:
A man’s quest to find answers for those who are haunted by the past leads him deeper into the shadows in this electrifying novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Promise Not to Tell.
Quinton Zane is back.
Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer’s head has garnered him a reputation in some circles–and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.
But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family’s hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas’s foster sons, starting with Jack.

Terrific review Jenn! I like reading books in order in a series too. I always feel like I’m missing out on something if I don’t. Glad you enjoyed! 💜

Thanks, Lindsay! I’m not a regular series reader for a couple reasons, but you definitely get more out of the characters if you start at the beginning. ♥️ Happy Friday! Xoxo

I always feel like a miss something when I read a series out of order. This one sounds good though all by itself. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks, Marialyce! It definitely could stand on its own, but it left me wanting to know a little more at the same time. Happy Friday!

I’ve yet to read a book by this author, partly because she writes under other pseudonyms with series that intersect. Glad you enjoyed this one, Jennifer, despite it being the 3rd in a series. I normally can’t do that so kudos to you!

Thanks, Jonetta! That’s interesting. I knew about the pseudonyms but not that the other series intersect. I really liked the author’s style of writing.

When I was on Shelfari, someone created a series list integrating the reading order. My sister-in-law is a HUGE fan!

This sounds interesting but I would definitely need to read the first two books first!

I like books that have a storyline looking at cold cases, it usually makes for an interesting read. I hadn’t heard of this book before but I’ll be keeping an eye out for this series. Fab review 🙂

Thanks so much, Hayley. I love anything to do with cold cases, too. One of my favorite tv shows, and I don’t watch much tv, is Cold Justice.

Sounds like the book besties found another winner. I will have to watch for this one and maybe the series. I like strong characters, but whey you like the villian because he is so well written, then that is my kind of book. Nice review Jennifer.

Thanks, Carla. I think it would be good to start with this one from the beginning. The main character changes in each one, but I think the villain really develops over time, or at least that is my impression? Jonetta mentioned in her comment that this author has several series which intersect- that sounds amazing!

She is quite a prolific author. I have a lot of her books on my physical bookshelf at home, but most are older ones. I will have to check this series and see what I have or what I can get.

But i just can’t, can i? I mean this one sounds pretty good, but i need to read it from book 1! 😀

I think it would be fantastic to start with book one for this one, and Norrie, I heard from Jonetta in another comment that the author has multiple series that have a fun intersection between them somehow. It’s like a treasure trove of thrillers!

Sounds good! I like the idea of him having to get help to come back from his “gift” ability, which makes sense given that he’s relating to very bad people! Cool idea.

Excellent review, Jennifer! I read a book by her years and years ago, but gosh, I can’t remember what it was…I would have been in high school, it was that long ago! I think it was Wildest Hearts, but I could be wrong. I read several of her books written under her pen name Amanda Quick back in my early twenties when I liked historical romances more than I do now…I do enjoy her writing style though, and I think I’d enjoy her suspense books much better now. This one sounds like it’s quite chilling! I’m glad you were able to enjoy it even though it was out of order in the series! ♥

Thanks so much, Steph! ♥️ I think I have a couple of her books under the Amanda Quick name, but I’ve not read them. That’s amazing that you have read her a couple times over such a time span and all the genres, too. She is certainly prolific! Xoxo

You’re welcome! Her Amanda Quick books are heavy on romance and less on history, lol. I couldn’t read them now, I think since I like my history with less, umm, sex, haha. My aunt is a huge fan of her books and used to give them to me, so that’s why I read them. She certainly is! I wish I were that talented, lol. xoxo

Thanks, Suzanne! Yes, apparently, there is quite a backstory with this foster family and the villain. This book had enough of that included that I could get a good taste of it.

They intrigue me, too, Nina. I think it’s because I enjoyed watching CSI, which is a little different, but sorta kind of the same. 😂 ♥️

Yeah. Although I prefer lighter mystery reading I love CSI. Haha. But Criminal Minds player with my head too much! Made me check the shadows!

Yes! I had to stop watching Criminal Minds because it disturbed me, but yet I can watch Dateline and 48 Hours that are about REAL murders.

I know!!!! I think that’s because of how the music and drama are so amped up in CM. And they really try to pull you into the minds of the criminals 😂😂
