Happy Wednesday and welcome to my blog tour stop for The Perilous Adventures of the Cowboy King by Jerome Charyn! I have a review, as well as an amazing giveaway (open to the UK, US, and Canada!), so please read all the way to the bottom to check it out! Thank you to Over the River PR for the invitation to the blog tour!
My Thoughts:
Upon reading The Perilous Adventures of the Cowboy King, I quickly realized how little I knew about Teddy Roosevelt. What a life! What a character.
Did you know Theodore Roosevelt was a police commissioner for New York City, a Rough Rider, an environmentalist? (Shhh…don’t tell…I didn’t know exactly what a Rough Rider was prior to reading this?)
No one would have known our fearless twenty-sixth president had a childhood filled with illness, but Teddy Roosevelt certainly did. The chapters on his childhood endeared him to me instantly. Teddy’s older sister, Bamie, had a disability. In addition to Bamie and Teddy, there is quite the cast of characters, including a lovable (pet!) mountain lion named Josephine.
Teddy has more than his share of hardship with his sick early life. He also loses his first wife during childbirth, and his mother passes away on the same day. Can you imagine? He leaves New York broken-hearted and filled with grief and ends up fighting crime as a sheriff in the Dakota territories. When he returns to New York, he marries his childhood sweetheart and quickly gets his life back on track, filling one political position after another when he becomes the youngest president of the United States after McKinley’s assassination.
My favorite aspects of the book are the wily and charming “characters,” who just so happen to have been real people, along with the perfectly timed humor. The facts about the time were illuminating and insightful, and the book almost reads like an adventure because Roosevelt led such a fascinating and unusual life. What filled these pages was only about half of Roosevelt’s life! I would love to read more!
Overall, I was enthralled with Teddy Roosevelt’s story and in awe of how Charyn presented it.
Thanks to Over the River PR, the publisher, and author for the complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Synopsis:
Raising the literary bar to a new level, Jerome Charyn re-creates the voice of Theodore Roosevelt, the New York City police commissioner, Rough Rider, and soon- to-be twenty-sixth president through his derring-do adventures, effortlessly combining superhero dialogue with haunting pathos. Beginning with his sickly childhood and concluding with McKinley’s assassination, the novel positions Roosevelt as a “perfect bull in a china shop,” a fearless crime fighter and pioneering environmentalist who would grow up to be our greatest peacetime president.
With an operatic cast, including “Bamie,” his handicapped older sister; Eleanor, his gawky little niece; as well as the devoted Rough Riders, the novel memorably features the lovable mountain lion Josephine, who helped train Roosevelt for his “crowded hour,” the charge up San Juan Hill. Lauded by Jonathan Lethem for his “polymorphous imagination and crack comic timing,” Charyn has created a classic of historical fiction, confirming his place as “one of the most important writers in American literature” (Michael Chabon).

Have you read The Perilous Adventures of the Cowboy King, or is it on your TBR? Have you read any other books about Teddy Roosevelt? Happy Reading! ~ Jennifer THR
I became interested in Teddy Roosevelt when I began the Gaslight Mystery series by Victoria Thompson, which features a NY city police detective serving during the time when Teddy was police commissioner. I had no idea he’d served in that role and throughout the series we learn more about this fascinating man. Thanks for featuring this title, Jennifer, and for an excellent review.

I, like you, now only what was taught in school about Teddy Roosevelt. When we lived in NY we had quite a few occasions to visit his summer home, Sagamore Hill. https://observer.com/2015/07/teddy-roosevelts-long-island-summer-home-reopens/
It was always a great spot to take our girls and their friends.

That cover completely mislead me 😅
Sounds quite interesting. Over here we don’t really study US presidents in detail, so this is all new info to me.

I understand, Norrie. I would feel the same way with your prime ministers (most of them- some of them we have learned about like Churchill, etc. ♥️

As Jerome Charyn’s partner, I was thrilled with your review. Then I read your followers’ comments – and WOW. Your readers are just the ones Jerome is always looking for: bright, open-minded, excited about learning and appreciative of being entertained. I wish I could give all your readers free books. Please, all of you, please write me with any questions you have for Jerome and, if your book budget is tight, I will try to get the very supportive publisher to send you a complimentary copy. And, Jennifer, I can’t wait to follow your blog. Thank you so much for reading and writing about my better half’s novel. It’s 100 years almost to the day since TR’s death, and it was Jerome’s hope to bring him roaring back to life. Your review gets him nearer to that goal. — Lenore Riegel JCPress@writemail.com

I knew a bit about him but I’d like to know more. As well as more about Ben Franklin for his scientific adventures. As always, I wonder about nonfiction works or how close to realistic this is. I’m sure I’d enjoy it; I do read tons of fiction but somehow it’s different for me when it is about someone real. Wonderful review!

Thanks, Anne! I understand. This was such a fascinating story, and based on the little research I did, it seems to fit the research that’s out there for the events in his life.

This sounds super! I know nothing about Teddy Roosevelt except that teddy bears were called after him (though that might be one of those myths that isn’t true for all I know, in which case I know less than nothing… 😂) but it sounds like he had an adventurous life for sure! I should definitely win this because a) I live in the UK and b) I need to know what a Rough Rider is… 😉

It’s my first giveaway available in the UK- YAY! I think I’d heard that about teddy bears, but now you have me wanting to google it! He most definitely had an adventurous life! Good luck, FF!

Great review Jennifer. I learned a lot about Teddy Roosevelt when I watched Night at the Museum. After seeing his character in that movie, I read some things about him. This looks like a fun way to present him to a new generation.
