Today I have a review of my first read from Jane Harper (I know!), The Lost Man now available Flatiron Books! I buddy read this with one of my blogger besties, Beth at Bibliobeth. Make sure to check out her fabulous review of The Lost Man! This type of suspenseful mystery is THE best to share with a friend because it begs to be talked about as you analyze all the plot twists and characters! Thank you, Beth, allowing me to tag along on this read with you. My experience was most definitely enriched. Please read on for my full review.
My Thoughts:
The Lost Man is my first read from Jane Harper!
The Bright brothers live on enormous adjacent cattle properties in the Australian outback. The Lost Man opens with two of the brothers, Nathan and Bub, meeting at the stockman’s grave landmark where their brother, Cameron, has passed away. Was there foul play, or did Cameron intentionally allow himself to die from dehydration in the brutal outback desert?
There are several suspects (in my mind) right away even in this sparsely populated area. Was it Nathan or Bub, the competitive brothers who may have wanted Cameron’s property or possibly a need for revenge?
Was it one or both of the drifters living and working on the property?
Or was Cameron’s wife, Ilse, somehow involved? The way things transpire, the spotlight blinks on each person in time, and I never knew who the red herrings were because there were several!
Now I know why Jane Harper’s writing is first described as atmospheric. YES, it absolutely was. Suspenseful? Another big yes. Dark and gritty? Uh huh!
If you enjoy mysteries, stories of family dynamics, easy-to-read, perfectly paced slower burning suspense, this book has your name all over it.
The Lost Man is an epic, deeply emotional story that will keep you on your toes, and its slower momentum will allow you plenty of time to analyze and explore what you think happened; that is what kept me invested all the more.
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Synopsis:
Two brothers meet at the border of their vast cattle properties under the unrelenting sun of outback Queensland, in this stunning new standalone novel from New York Timesbestseller Jane Harper
They are at the stockman’s grave, a landmark so old, no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron. The Bright family’s quiet existence is thrown into grief and anguish. Something had been troubling Cameron. Did he lose hope and walk to his death? Because if he didn’t, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects…
Dark, suspenseful, and deeply atmospheric, The Lost Man is the highly anticipated next book from the bestselling and award-winning Jane Harper, author of The Dry and Force of Nature.
Have you read The Lost Man, or is it on your TBR? Have you read any other books by Jane Harper? Happy Reading! ~ Jennifer THR

I loved the first chapter (or was it the prologue) of the body at the grave – really chilling, almost to the point of being spooky! I ate an awful lot of ice cream while reading this one… 😉

Yes!!! Harper is one of my favorite authors who loves to take her time with a story and it’s worth the wait for all that atmosphere that becomes a character in itself, the people who are vividly developed and the mystery that absorbs you. I was so hoping you’d confirm this here, which you did so, so well. Kudos, Jennifer, and I can’t wait to read it. It’s even better on audio.

I just finished it and, yes, it’s atmospheric with vivid setting descriptions and overall well written ……but the ending troubled me a bit and left me unsettled……a little too dark for me……I also found it difficult to believe the mother’s actions……I think Harper did an excellent job of describing the fear, desperation, and feelings of helplessness/hopelessness that abuse victims experience.

Love how you’ve described this as a slow burn, Jennifer! I’m very intrigued to see how the author sets up each character as a suspect and who (if anyone) is ultimately guilty.
