Today I am super excited to share my review of The Last by Hanna Jameson, publishing on April 9, 2019 by Atria Books!
My Thoughts:
Woo, this book! So, the less you know going in, the better! There’s a reason it has a brief synopsis, and my review will be to the point, too!
The Last is a dystopian psychological thriller on every level. An American professor is left stranded in Switzerland as a nuclear war erupts. The professor is not alone. There are twenty other “survivors.”
As if surviving nuclear war isn’t enough, this crew has a murderer in their midsts as the body of a girl has been discovered in a water tank at the hotel. All the survivors start to suspect each other, and they become obsessed with solving the crime.
A thrilling, chilling, thought-provoking novel (could this nuclear war really happen?), The Last leaves you wondering what’s the truth and where are the lies. It’s dark, disturbing, and completely absorbing. Kudos to Hanna Jameson for this brilliantly original and unsettling book!
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own. Thanks to my friend, Melisa, and Atria Books for this special opportunity.
Synopsis:
“Nuclear apocalypse meets murder mystery, with an amazing cast of characters. It’s Stephen King meets Agatha Christie, in this fantastic and highly original novel” -Luca Vesta, author of Dead Gone
“The questions Jameson poses—who will be with you at the end of the world, and what kind of person will you be?—are as haunting as the plot itself. This is a chilling and extraordinary book.” -Emily St. John Mandel, bestselling author of Station Eleven
For fans of high-concept thrillers such as Annihilation and The Girl with All the Gifts, this breathtaking dystopian psychological thriller follows an American academic stranded at a Swiss hotel as the world descends into nuclear war—along with twenty other survivors—who becomes obsessed with identifying a murderer in their midst after the body of a young girl is discovered in one of the hotel’s water tanks.

So this is the one with the angel wing begonias! 😂 And those roses? Those are the ones you helped me save from my yard! All flowers were mine- yay! This pic is from late summer! Thanks so much, M! 💕

Oh! How cool! My goodness, I didn’t realize these were pics from that long ago. 😂 I was beginning to question your growing season! ❤

Some you asked about were as late as November and December. Those flowers were still going strong in the garage! This book just happened to be a book I got in the summer, but the publisher asked for a March review. Most of my pics are recent ones, but there are a couple outliers where I’ve had the books a while. ♥️

I love dystopian and thrillers but I’m a little worried if it left you wondering truth / lies. Excellent review.

Thanks, Jee! It was like a post-apocalyptic, dystopian Agatha Christie! Sometimes I don’t use my own flowers, especially in winter, but these are actually from my yard. I got this book over the summer, and I took this one in September. ♥️ Right now I have camellias blooming and my tulips are popping up, so hopefully they’ll be in pics soon!

I love them too! One of my favorites! (Tulips) We have had some sunflowers from birdseed that randomly sprouted but not truly planted.

Great review! I particularly enjoyed this book, I went in thinking it was going to have more of a murder mystery focus which it didn’t so I didn’t necessarily expect the direction it went into but I did enjoy where it took me! I felt quite chilled by it ultimately because I felt that it gave a rather realistic portrayal of what people could/ would be like if the events happened. Storing medicine and guns etc., having to decide what justice looks like in this new world and the attitude of some of the men towards women and almost ‘who gets them.’ It made me shudder.

Thanks, Gerry! I agree- I think that was the scariest part- how quickly others would turn and put themselves first. Yikes! So unsettling!
