Welcome to my stop on the The Lieutenant’s Nurse blog tour sponsored by TLC Book Tours! Thanks to TLC for the invitation!
About the Book:
November, 1941. She’s never even seen the ocean before, but Eva Cassidy has her reasons for making the crossing to Hawaii, and they run a lot deeper than escaping a harsh Michigan winter. Newly enlisted as an Army Corps nurse, Eva is stunned by the splendor she experiences aboard the steamship SS Lurline; even more so by Lt. Clark Spencer, a man she is drawn to but who clearly has secrets of his own. But Eva’s past—and the future she’s trying to create—means that she’s not free to follow her heart. Clark is a navy intelligence officer, and he warns her that the United States won’t be able to hold off joining the war for long, but nothing can prepare them for the surprise attack that will change the world they know.
In the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Eva and her fellow nurses band together for the immense duty of keeping the American wounded alive. And the danger that finds Eva threatens everything she holds dear. Amid the chaos and heartbreak, Eva will have to decide whom to trust and how far she will go to protect those she loves.
Set in the vibrant tropical surroundings of the Pacific, The Lieutenant’s Nurse is an evocative, emotional WWII story of love, friendship and the resilient spirit of the heroic nurses of Pearl Harbor.
My Thoughts:
Eva Cassidy moves from Michigan to Hawaii in November 1941. She’s a shiny new Army Corps nurse, and she’s in awe of the steamship she’s aboard, as well as being drawn to Lt. Clark Spencer, an intelligence officer in the Navy.
Eva has her guard up. She wants a different life and believes she can’t let her heart get in the way of finding it. The attack on Pearl Harbor terrifies everyone and rightfully so; the world has completely changed.
Eva and the nurses she works with are charged with keeping the wounded alive. Eva has a hard time finding who she can trust.
I adored the lush tropical setting of Hawaii during this time period. Sara Ackerman brings it to life. I also loved Eva as a main character: formidable, complex, and fallible. I loved the resilience of all the nurses and how they put their whole hearts into their work (and the author captured that so poignantly).
Overall, The Lieutenant’s Nurse is a story of the Pearl Harbor nurses- their friendship, loves, strength, vitality, and indomitableness that could not be dampened by war.
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
About the Author:
Sara writes books about love and life, and all of their messy and beautiful imperfections. Born and raised in Hawaii, she studied journalism and later earned graduate degrees in psychology and Chinese medicine. She is the author of historical novels Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers and The Lieutenant’s Nurse, with several more in the works. She blames Hawaii for her addiction to writing, and sees no end to its untapped stories. Sara lives on the Big Island with her boyfriend and a houseful of bossy animals.

Awesome review Jen! We had a tornado warning last night at 11:55……what a way to wake up! It touched down just past our town…….so scary and then you have to try and fall back asleep…..yeah like that’s gonna happen!
Have a peaceful night my friend!😳🌺💜

Thanks, Sus! We had a rough night, too! What a way to start the week! So the warning came in at 12:45 am saying to seek shelter “now;” that possible tornados were in the area. I had to heard everyone, including the three cats to the basement. So much fun! And I was terrified. We lost electricity, it came back on, and they told us to stay in place for some time because another round may come. It didn’t. Then, when I finally got to sleep, I was awakened by the power surging off again. For over an hour, and I sat there and worried and could not get back to sleep. Rocky start to this four day work week! How terrifying that you had an actual one so close to you, too! One year ago to the day, Sus, a tornado horrifically damaged Greensboro so badly that three schools are still closed. I was so worried that was happening again. I hope you are having a peaceful night. ♥️ xoxoxo

This sounds excellent. I’ve not read many historical fiction titles that focus on Pearl Harbor so this one definitely has me curious, especially since it focuses on nurses.

I seriously cannot handle how cute your cats are in all of your photos! 😀 Also, this sounds so interesting – I’ve never read a book set in Hawaii or a WWII story from a nurse/Pearl Harbor perspective.

This sounds like a beautiful book Jennifer, that matches with your wonderful photograph. I enjoy WWII stories and the heroes that rose to the task, especially women because we don’t here enough about them. Great review.

Thanks so much, Carla! It really is a beautiful book! I’ve not read any other Pearl Harbor books that I can remember, so this was an interesting setting (and also scary at times). You are right- we don’t hear enough about the female heroes!
