Today I have a review of Malibu Bluff by Janna King, publishing today via Pegasus Books! Thank you to Kathleen Carter
My Thoughts:
When I received this book for review, I did a quick read of The Seasonaires, which was released last year. I had read Malibu Bluff is a standalone, but reading The Seasonaires really set the stage for Malibu Bluff because I knew some of the characters and backstory, and truthfully, these stories are such guilty pleasures, I gobbled up every bit.
Disclaimer: I’m a recovering reality TV addict. It was bad, y’all. I’m from the reality TV generation starting with The Real World. I then moved on to Big Brother, Survivor, Laguna Beach, The Hills, and up to the Housewives. All.of.them. In the past year, I’ve been reading more, and TV and I have had a falling out, and slowly reality TV is losing its hold on me. That said, when I’m not feeling well and can’t read for whatever reason, there is nothing better for relieving stress than some reality TV drama.
All of that to say, Malibu Bluff is indulgent and highly reminiscent of my favorite reality TV shows, especially Laguna Beach and The Hills.
The premise is this: each summer six twenty-somethings are selected by Lyndon Wyld, the founder of her clothing line, to be brand ambassadors and influencers. This year, Mia, from last season, is chose to take the brand to the west coast and lead the pack.
Mia’s mother passed away, and she has to be persuaded to join up again. She also thinks a change of scenery will be good for her.
Mia will be living in a beautiful mansion with the other ambassadors, and each of them has quite the larger-than-life personality.
Malibu made for such a fun setting! It took me right back to my shows I’ve loved. As with The Seasonaires, there’s some darkness and intrigue, which adds to the drama.
Overall, Malibu Bluff is all about the sheer entertainment. The people are pretty, even when their actions aren’t. I couldn’t relate much to the characters, though I did find Mia sympathetic at times through the loss of her mom. But all that doesn’t matter because I don’t think the characters are meant to be relatable. They are just here for your amusement, and Malibu Beach was as fun as an amusement park.
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Synopsis:
Every summer is designed as a dream for six twenty-something seasonaires chosen by Lyndon Wyld, the founder of her namesake clothing line. This year takes the new brand ambassadors to the West Coast, led by last season’s Mia, who has been roped back in after her mother’s death by a sweeter deal and the hope to leave her grief behind for the California sun.
Mia is thankful that she won’t have to live with another former seasonaire, Presley, who is now handling Lyndon Wyld’s public relations in Los Angeles after making a meal out of the previous summer’s tragedy. In Malibu, Mia will share a stunning modern manse with Eve, an outspoken activist; Alex, a gorgeous boundary pusher; Chase, a warm-hearted surfer; Oliver, a preppy charmer; and Brandon, the son of Lyndon’s business partner, and the young producer of the brand’s new digital channel, which will up the seasonaires’ social media game.
Malibu is the perfect playground for their antics, which serve as juicy entertainment for their growing fanbase. But detractors from Mia’s past come back to haunt her, and when the line between what’s real and what’s staged gets blurred, the results could be deadly.
Have you read Malibu Bluff (and/or The Seasonaires), or is it on your TBR? Happy Reading! ~ Jennifer THR

Haha I wouldn’t have guessed that you were once into reality TV. I guess you’ve never mentioned it before. I used to watch lots of those shows but now I only watch Survivor and Amazing Race. This sounds like an entertaining read and I love the sound of the setting. I think I’d enjoy it too. Fab review.

Thanks, Diana! The more I read, the more those reality shows got pushed aside, but they are fun every now and again. I used to love Survivor and Amazing Race. They were SO good! It’s a beautiful setting for this one!

I would NEVER have pegged you as a reality TV addict😏 That’s just stunning! I watch virtually none except shows like The Voice or Project Runway. Excellent review, by the way!

Thanks, Jonetta! I’m reformed, though! 😂 I hardly watch any now. Project Runway was one of my favorites when it first started. There was nothing better!

Reality TV??? Really?? I’m more of a LivePD, Deadliest Catch, Moonshiners, Escaping Polygamy kind of reality tv watcher! Hahaha great review Jen! Glad you loved it and it gave you your reality fix!😂💖☕📚

Reformed! No longer! 😂 My husband loves those shows, and I used to watch with him years ago, but they got boring for me. I need to mix things up! Escaping Polygamy sounds like one I could check out though! I do still like Sister Wives! Thanks so much, Sus! It was great entertainment! ♥️

You’ve totally sold me on this book! I’m a reality TV fan too – more so in my younger years but I do still love Big Brother. I loved The Real World back in the day, it was must-see TV when I was a teen! I’m definitely going to try and get hold of a copy of this book to read over the summer. Lovely review 🙂

Thanks so much, Hayley! I’m glad I’m not alone, especially with my younger fascination with the shows. Yes, I still have to watch Big Brother. I can’t believe it’s been on almost 20 years! Crazy! I hope you can get a chance to read this one and make sure to check out the first book, The Seasonaires, too! ♥️

You’re welcome! Not a lot except for American Idol the middle seasons (I missed the first few), and I couldn’t miss my AI nights! My husband used to be big into Survivor and a couple of the others, so they were on in the background while I did other things, but I never really paid attention. They are entertaining though!

I loved those first few seasons of Idol, too! Especially Clay Aiken!

I totally missed the season with Clay Aiken, but I started watching the next season with Carrie Underwood. I think I watched it until season 10 or 11 but I can’t remember who won although I can see him in my mind, lol.

I loved that season with Carrie, too! I can’t remember when I fell off with them. It may have been because of the judges that I tired of it?

That was such a great season! I stopped when Randy left the show. All the judge changes were driving me batty.

Haha – like everybody else, I’m stunned by your revelation! Who’d have guessed? 😀 I used to watch the celebrity versions of things like Big Brother, but I had to make an effort to stop – boy, can they become addictive or what?? I found myself one night watching a bunch of people sleeping and realised I must have gone insane… 😂

😂 I love how stunned everyone is! I’m wondering what everyone thinks I do? Read? ✔️ Play with kittens ✔️ Read ✔️ Garden ✔️ Read ✔️ 😂 I love that you watched the celebrity versions. Those tend to be my least favorite, and I’m not sure why? So addictive! Watching people sleeping? 😂 You have sufficiently cracked me up tonight, FF!

That’s fun how this story took you back to your TV guilty pleasures. I don’t watch much in the way of reality TV but I do remember enjoying the early seasons of The Real World way back in the day, lol.
