Today I have a review of Lock Every Door by Riley Sager, publishing on July 2, 2019 via Dutton Books. A big thank you to Dutton for my copy!
I read my first Riley Sager book! I read my first Riley Sager book! 🎉
My Thoughts:
Jules Larsen is an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, a big-deal property in Manhattan. Oh, and the Bartholomew is rather mysterious on top of it.
There are rules, though, and Jules is ok with them because she’s overwhelmed with the potential this job offers, as well as the beautiful building itself. The rules: nobody can visit. She has to spend every night there. She cannot “bother” any of the other residents.
Jules becomes friends with another apartment sitter, Ingrid, who shares the Bartholomew has a dark past. Shortly after, Ingrid is missing.
Jules wants to find out what happened to her friend, and she quickly learns that Ingrid is not the only sitter to have gone missing. Will Jules be next?
Lock Every Door is a slow burn. It gives you plenty of time to think, analyze, and be wrong about what’s going to happen next. I found it exciting and original with lots of twists and turns. The very last twist? I had no idea THAT would happen!
With tons of suspense, gobs of creepiness, and oodles of tension, Lock Every Door is the thriller we’ve been talking about all summer, and I don’t foresee that changing any time soon!
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
About the Book:
No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.
As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly, disturbingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story . . . until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.
Searching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew’s dark past and into the secrets kept within its walls. Her discovery that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing at the Bartholomew pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building’s hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

Woohoo! Glad you loved it! You know I love Riley Sager and that this was at the tip-top of my most anticipated reads, which of course it loved it to my expectations and more since this is my fave of his three! I LOVED that it had a gothic vibe (who would have guessed, lol) and it was more complex than his others. Great review! Mine will be up on Tuesday!! 🙂 ♥

I JUST found out today that Riley Sager is a male author–which kind of blew my mind–so this is awesome timing. 😀 I really enjoyed his previous book and am looking forward to this one! Happy to hear you loved it, Jennifer!

Thanks so much, Kathy! I always thought he was female, too. I think when Final Girls initially released they kept the author a mystery. I hope you love this too! It’s a good one!

I just immediately assume every thriller with female protagonists is written by female authors. It happened with A.J. Finn too! 😀

Lovely review! I was absolutely blown away by this book. I was able to empathize with Jules so much in terms of her impoverished background that made me wonder if I was still in that place of vulnerability, would I fall prey to something like this. This one really messed with my mind.

Thanks, Toya! I agree- I had those same thoughts. The slow burn of it allowed me to really think about it and insert myself a little into the plot with the what ifs!
