Welcome to my stop on the Unreasonable Doubts blog tour sponsored by Suzy Approved Book Tours! Thank you to Suzy for the invitation!
About the Book:
Jaded New York City Public Defender Liana Cohen would give anything to have one client in whom she can believe. Dozens of hardened criminals and repeat offenders have chipped away at her faith in both herself and the system. Her boyfriend Jakob’s high-powered law firm colleagues see her do-gooder job as a joke, which only adds to the increasing strain in their relationship.
Enter imprisoned felon Danny Shea, whose unforgivable crime would raise a moral conflict in an attorney at the height of her idealism―and that hasn’t been Liana in quite a while. But Danny’s astonishing blend of good looks, intelligence, and vulnerability intrigues Liana. Could he be the client she’s been longing for―the wrongly accused in need of a second chance? Is he innocent? As their attorney-client relationship transforms into something less than arm’s length, Liana is forced to confront fundamental questions of truth, faith, and love―and to decide who she wants to be.
My Thoughts:
Liana Cohen is a public defender in New York City. She is feeling jaded these days. While she was once hopeful and working with purpose, she has seen the worst sides of people repeatedly and heard all the lies.
She’s also dating Jakob, an attorney at a fancy law firm, and his coworkers look down on Liana’s public defender job.
Danny Shea enters Liana’s professional life as a felon. His crime is one that would get under anyone’s skin. But then again, what if Danny is innocent? Liana is hopeful this may be her chance to overturn a wrongful conviction.
And then Liana and Danny’s relationship crosses some lines, which leaves Liana questioning everything.
Unreasonable Doubts is such a fresh and personal take on a legal thriller. Liana felt genuine and real from the start, and I appreciated her honesty with her work. I’ve always wondered how public defenders and other defense attorneys can do their jobs if they ever doubt their clients. Liana’s character offered insight into just that.
The author also did an amazing job with Danny’s characterization. I just plain loved this story. It was well-told, intriguing, and while there was all this mixed-up emotion in the beginning, I was left with positive feelings in the end, and I love that.
Incidentally, the author worked as a defense lawyer. She knows of what she writes, and I think that added weight to the authenticity here.
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

I love when authors actually work in the job they write about, then you don’t have to wonder if they’ve done enough research😁 Lovely review!

I haven’t read a legal drama in quite sometime, but I like the sound of this one because I’d love to read the character development and how the relationship / lines are blurred here! Also, I like how you mentioned that the story left you with a positive feeling because I wouldn’t expect that from a legal story like this!

Great review of what sounds like an interesting book! I do like when legal thrillers are written by actual lawyers – it really adds to the feeling of authenticity. It doesn’t really sound the same at all, but it reminded me just a bit of Sharon Bolton’s fab Daisy in Chains – did you read it?

Thanks, FF! I have not read that one, but I think I may own it? Yes, it really adds to the authenticity when the author is a lawyer. I think it’s especially true for defense lawyers because that’s such a complex arena.

I love legal thrillers and like you, I’ve always wondered about the whole idea of defense lawyers who have to work with clients who they don’t really believe is innocent. This book sounds so good and I love that the author was a defense lawyer. Adding it to my TBR. Great review!

I like that this has a personal angle to it. Sometimes I tend to get bored with legal thrillers if they read too much like procedurals. Great review!

Thanks, Suzanne! I feel the same way about procedurals.
