Today I am super excited to have a review of The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal, publishing today, August 13, 2019, via Atria/Emily Bestler Books.
My Thoughts:
The Doll Factory is set in 1850s London. The Great Exhibition is going up on Hyde Park. It’s an art exhibition and among the crowd watching the event are Iris and Silas, who meet by chance. Iris is an aspiring artist and Silas is collector of curiosities and a taxidermist (creepy!). Iris does not think much of the meeting, but to Silas, it’s a point of importance.
Iris is asked to model for Louis Frost, and she agrees if he will teach her how to paint. This is only the beginning for Iris as she sees doors opening for her and her passion for art.
However, Silas is only thinking of Iris, and his thoughts are obsessive, dark, and sinister.
I LOVED the Victorian London setting. Macneal brings it vividly to life. The tone is dark. The Gothic elements are strong and haunting. Silas oozes creepiness. Admittedly, there were some parts that were too dark for me, and I had to skim over those.
There is something for everyone in The Doll Factory. It’s frightening and well-paced. I loved the art references and the writing flows smoothly. The obsession and darkness of it all is drawn so well. I was gripped and found the entire read compelling.
Overall, The Doll Factory is a chilling piece of equal parts historical fiction and mystery. It’s a page-turner, and I adored it, though it completely creeped me out!
TW: due to the taxidermy, please be aware there were some animal scenes I had to skip over.
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
About the Book:
The #1 International Bestseller
New York Times Editor’s Choice
“A lush, evocative Gothic.” —The New York Times Book Review
“This terrifically exciting novel will jolt, thrill, and bewitch readers.” —Booklist, starred review
Obsession is an art.
In this “sharp, scary, gorgeously evocative tale of love, art, and obsession” (Paula Hawkins, bestselling author of The Girl on the Train), a beautiful young woman aspires to be an artist, while a man’s dark obsession may destroy her world forever.
In 1850s London, the Great Exhibition is being erected in Hyde Park and, among the crowd watching the dazzling spectacle, two people meet by happenstance. For Iris, an arrestingly attractive aspiring artist, it is a brief and forgettable moment but for Silas, a curiosity collector enchanted by all things strange and beautiful, the meeting marks a new beginning.
When Iris is asked to model for Pre-Raphaelite artist Louis Frost, she agrees on the condition that he will also teach her to paint. Suddenly, her world begins to expand beyond her wildest dreams—but she has no idea that evil is waiting in the shadows. Silas has only thought of one thing since that chance meeting, and his obsession is darkening by the day.
“A page-turning psychological thriller” (Essie Fox, author of The Somnambulist) that will haunt you long after you finish it, The Doll Factory is perfect for fans of The Alienist, Drood, and The Historian.

The cover does not say “sinister” and “creepy” to me, but I trust you! I must take a closer look at this book, thanks for sharing😁

My pleasure, Tammy! So one of the main characters is a curiosities collector, and he wants this girl for his collection basically because he becomes so obsessed with her. So she’s like the butterfly and caught under the glass by him if that makes sense.

Wow this sounds really good. How dark did it get?

I LOVED it, but it has its dark moments. One of the main characters is a taxidermist and his work is creepy and morbid just to give you a taste. It worked for me in the context of the story because it’s so atmospheric and gothic.

Wonderful review, Jennifer. I’m so glad you loved this one. I agree the setting was wonderful and the writing was magnificent, but I can’t believe that I’m admitting it-it was way too dark for me (the person who loves graphic violence in her thrillers, lol). It went dark in ways that I didn’t imagine! Happy Tuesday, my friend! Have a wonderful day. xoxo ♥

Thanks, Steph! This was definitely easier for me than a Karin Slaughter novel, but it was super dark. I look forward to your full review! Happy Tuesday and I hope you are having a great day also! ♥️

You’re welcome, Jennifer! Now I can stomach Karin Slaughter any day of the week, but I couldn’t this one at all. Silas, just no…Thank you! I am except for sweltering. Fall needs to hurry up and get here, lol. I hope you are too.

Fantastic review, Jennifer! I have a feeling this book may be too dark for me, although it sounds very interesting💜

I don’t know why, but I really wasn’t expecting the sinister turn with this story. I feel like the 1850s setting def adds another element of spookiness to the story and I’m 100% intrigued. On my mile long list lol!

I totally understand about the long list! 😂 This one has some animal cruelty because of the taxidermy. I just want to mention that. I had to skip over those parts. Otherwise, I adored this read. It’s completely original and well-done.

A couple of days ago, I was contemplating what to buy for my monthly audio credit. The choice was between The Doll Factory and The Handmaid’s Tale. In the end, I decided on the latter, but I am not convinced, it was the right decision.
I am sure, I will read (or listen to) The Doll Factory at some point and after reading your excellent review, I am looking even more forward to it!

Aww, that’s too funny and thank you so much! I look forward to your thoughts on THT. Is it your first go with the book in general? I should probably try the audio of it.

Yes, I haven’t attempted THT before. I look forward to it, but I am not sure I am in the mood for a depressing read just now.

Fantastic review! I am a bit worried it would be too dark for me. It does sound tempting though. Loved your review!

Thanks, Kim! The taxidermy makes it plenty dark, but there was so much more to the story than just those aspects if that makes sense.

Great review Jen! This one is on my tbr! I’m a little weary about the taxidermy scenes, but are they easy enough to skip over without missing much of the plot?

Thanks, Toya! I was able skip over them and I didn’t feel like I missed much because the character is so revolting anyway. I know some people don’t like to skip any narrative, and I understand that too.

The whole idea of taxidermy freaks me out. This does sound like a compelling read though and I like how it is a mix of two interesting genres. Great review.

I’ve seen quite a few cover variations for this one, and none of them makes me think that this will be a dark / scary story, which it seems to be 😀

It’s definitely a dark read with the sinister taxidermist! That cover is beautiful, though, and you are right- not dark, but it speaks to the taxidermist’s obsession and wanting to capture the MC like he did with his other curiosities! 😬

Thanks for the trigger warning. I just got a copy of this and will probably want to skip over those scenes as well. It still sounds like a great read though so I’m excited to get to it.
