Welcome to my stop on the blog tour celebrating the release of The Passengers by John Marrs! Thank you to Berkley Publishing for the invitation! Stay tuned for information on how to win a copy at the bottom of this post!
About the Book:
You’re riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, “You are going to die.”
Just as self-driving cars become the trusted, safer norm, eight people find themselves in this terrifying situation, including a faded TV star, a pregnant young woman, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife, and a suicidal man.
From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast to millions of people around the world. But the public will show their true colors when they are asked, “Which of these people should we save?…And who should we kill first?”
My Thoughts:
The Passengers represents what could be anyone’s worst nightmare given the future of self-driving cars.
From the synopsis, “You’re riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, ‘You are going to die.’” 😬
Self-driving cars have become the norm. They are trusted and considered safer at this point; that is, until eight people are in the same predicament as that quote above.
Not only that, but cameras in their cars are filming and broadcasting live the panic of these people, only contributing to mass hysteria.
Oh, and did I mention, the public is being asked to choose who should be saved and who should die, not unlike voting for your favorite castaway on Survivor.
Oh my goodness, what a literal thrill ride. This summer I no longer want to do escape rooms, and now I don’t want to step foot in a self-driving car! Ever! The pacing with The Passengers is nonstop. For me, it was a one-sitting type of read. There’s tension and dread building from the very start.
The twists are shocking, and I was completely enthralled in this story. It’s just how we all like our thrillers, so don’t miss it. A monumental thriller to wrap up summer!
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my. Own.

Loved your review, Jennifer! The book was so engrossing. I love your point about the public votes- I wonder how many of them treated it as a reality show and failed to grasp how tragic the situation was!

Thanks, Toni! That part particularly terrified me! I could see it happening in real life too. Sometimes people get so caught up in reality tv they forget the real world!

I love your review, Jennifer! I am excited to read this book even though I’d be terrified to be trapped in a self-driving car. 😳

Great review! I have this one on my tbr. I love the idea of self-driving cars, but things like this really bring out the fears. I am fascinated by the public involvement on who will die or live. While it sounds appalling, it doesn’t strike me as far fetched.

Wow this sounds so thrilling and almost creepy since self-driving cars aren’t a far off reality for us! Also, incorporating a public vote on who to save??

Hahaha! You better stop reading these books or you’ll be too frightened to leave your house! Of course, if you’ve read Ruth Ware’s latest, you’ll also be too scared to stay IN your house…!! 😉 The very idea of self-driving cars terrifies me.

I know! I’ll be scared everywhere! I have the Ruth Ware book but haven’t read it yet. I better wait until I recover from this one!

I have seen so many positive reviews for this one. It appeals to my fascination of artificial intelligence. Did you know one of the big hurdles for driverless cars is the insurance question, i.e. when two driverless cars collide, whose insurance is going to pay out? Anyway, I think I have to read this one sooner or later, I am sure I would enjoy it.

No, I didn’t know that, and that’s fascinating. I don’t know what the answer would be!
Read this one when you are looking for pure entertainment. It’s one of those trainwreck-type reads- you just have to keep going with it to see how it all winds up.
