Today I have a review of The King of Warsaw, now available from Amazon Crossing! A big thank you to Over the River PR for the invitation and for the gifted book. Read all the way down to find out how you can win a copy- international!
My Thoughts:
What an enthralling read!
In 1937, Jakub Szapiro is a boxer and a hero of his Jewish community in Poland. When he’s not boxing, he works for a seedy crime lord, and everyone fears his wrath. He is paid well for his efforts, which include murder among other crimes. Jakub wants to be king of the dark underbelly, and he’s well on his way.
At the same time, Hitler’s mercury is rising. More violence is promised to the community in which Jakub has also been a terror. The Jews are hoping to find comfort in Palestine. But Jakub doesn’t want to go… He wants to be the king of Warsaw.
King of Warsaw is a dark and gritty story with a strong historical backdrop. I felt completely immersed in Poland during this time period. The writing, along with the pacing, is compelling.
I highly recommend The King of Warsaw to fans of dark, gripping historical mysteries and thrillers. This book reminded me of Andrew Gross’ historical thrillers I happen to love, too.
I’ve read some fantastic translated books via Amazon Crossing this year and last. I’m grateful this imprint is sharing these talented authors with us.
I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
About the Book:
A city ignited by hate. A man in thrall to power. The ferociously original award-winning bestseller by Poland’s literary phenomenon—his first to be translated into English.
It’s 1937. Poland is about to catch fire.
In the boxing ring, Jakub Szapiro commands respect, revered as a hero by the Jewish community. Outside, he instills fear as he muscles through Warsaw as enforcer for a powerful crime lord. Murder and intimidation have their rewards. He revels in luxury, spends lavishly, and indulges in all the pleasures that barbarity offers. For a man battling to be king of the underworld, life is good. Especially when it’s a frightening time to be alive.
Hitler is rising. Fascism is escalating. As a specter of violence hangs over Poland like a black cloud, its marginalized and vilified Jewish population hopes for a promise of sanctuary in Palestine. Jakub isn’t blind to the changing tide. What’s unimaginable to him is abandoning the city he feels destined to rule. With the raging instincts that guide him in the ring and on the streets, Jakub feels untouchable. He must maintain the order he knows—even as a new world order threatens to consume him.

A Jewish, boxing, crime lord in Poland pre WW2! I love the variety in your reading! Great review and beautiful photo. How are the cats doing, btw? Has been a while since they have been in a photo, I think.

Thanks so much, Stargazer. This was a great hist fic. I was captivated by it even if it was on the darker side for me.
The cats are doing great! Harper had another seizure, two months to do the day after the last one, but we had a really stressful day that day (tornado warning and had to rush to the basement- not a frequent occurrence here!). Other than that, all has been well, and they are not that interested in taking photos with me! 😂 Thanks so much for asking. I hope you and yours are well and safe. ❤️

Hope Harper is ok! Do you know why she is getting seizures? Ah, ok fair enough that they don’t want to be in photos, I can completely sympathise with that! 🙂

I’m not giving up on them, though! Hopefully you’ll see them soon or I can just include some pics without books! ❤️ I thought maybe I had told you that back in February she was diagnosed with genetic epilepsy, at only 1 year old. It was in the midst of Dickens recovering from surgery to remove a tumor from his eyelid. A stressful time but they have both adjusted well. She has only had the one episode since February 14.

Aww, poor thing. I didn’t even know cats could get epilepsy. It must have been a stressful time, but I am glad to hear that both have adjusted well. Hopefully, Harper’s seizures will be rare going forward.

Thank you. I definitely hope so too. It’s very rare in cats, more common in dogs. Our biggest hope is that it’s something she’ll grow out of. She has to take meds every 12 hours now and she is sooooo easy, easiest cat to give meds to, thankfully.

I’m always amazed at all the beautiful flowers in your photos. Do you grow all of these??
Also, this book totally sounds like something I’d enjoy. I think the cover does a great job at capturing the grittiness that you mention in your review. Obviously, going to add this one to my list!

I love to include the flowers from my yard, but these were ones I bought. Between here and instagram, I’ve been able to show a few of my spring flowers so far. I just had my first roses yesterday! I love this cover, too, LP. It’s so interesting and makes you look twice!

Lol, there’s something funny about the MC being so focused on being King of Warsaw especially given the time he was living in. I would have imagined ‘staying alive’ would have been a priority instead. You’ve definitely made me curious about this one. Great review!

Thanks so much, Diana! At first, I don’t think he had any idea how things would go, but you are so right!

This sounds fascinating!! Why the MC so desperately wanted to be the King of Warsaw? Great review, Jennifer! Glad you enjoyed this book!
