Welcome to my stop on the Derailed blog tour sponsored by Suzy Approved Book Tours! Thank you to Suzy for the invitation!
About the Book:
A dying wish. A secret world.
Can this grieving investigator stay on the right track?PI Kelly Pruett is determined to make it on her own. And juggling clients at her late father’s detective agency, a controlling ex, and caring for a deaf daughter was never going to be easy. So she takes it as a good sign when a letter left by her dad ties into an unsolved case of a young woman struck by a train.
Hunting down the one person who can prove the mysterious death was not just a drunken accident, Kelly discovers this witness is in no condition to talk. And the closer she gets to the truth the longer her list of sleazy suspects with murderous motives grows. Each clue exposes another layer of the victim’s steamy double life.
On a crash course with a killer, she must piece together the puzzle of what really happened to the victim that rainy night, before her own fate is sealed and she loses everything near and dear, including her life.
My Thoughts:
First in a new series, Derailed is an exciting mystery.
Kelly Pruett is a private investigator working on her own. She inherited her late father’s agency and is doing her best to leave behind her controlling ex.
Kelly finds a letter from her dad that is tied somehow to a cold case involving a woman hit by a train. Was it an accident or was it murder? Kelly is on the case and putting all the pieces together.
I really grew to love Kelly. She became stronger during the story and with the hardships she faced. There’s a touch of romance in this well-written mystery. I had a lot of fun with this one and found it exciting overall!
The best part? It’s a series so I can continue to follow along with Kelly and what’s next for her.
I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
About the Author:
At home in Washington, she enjoys spending time with her family and her writing companions/fur-kids, Bella, a bossy golden retriever and August, her mischievous kitty. When she’s not at home, you can find Mary on a beach on the Big Island where she and her husband recharge. But even under the palm trees and blazing sun she’s plotting her next murder—novel that is.

Thanks so much, M! I hope so too! So far that kalanchoe is still alive which is a rare thing for me and kalanchoes! 😂

You have so many interesting flowers, Jen! I’ve never even had one of those before. Guess it’s time to look for one. 😉 I hope it stays strong for you.

I definitely should let you know it’s toxic to cats! I didn’t buy this one- it was a gift, but I keep it in a room where the cats can’t go. It’s a type of succulent and you’ll see it when you see the leaves, and it really does have bright beautiful flowers. It reminds me some of an African violet. And thanks so much! ❤️

Oh, interesting! I love succulents. That’s scary about the kitties though. Thanks, Jen.

You’re welcome, M! I can’t remember if I told you but Harper, one of my one year old kitties, was diagnosed with epilepsy in February, and now I am even more cautious about plants because we had to rule out toxins in the home first. Like right now I have a beautiful calla Lilly bloom from the yard, and it has to stay out on my deck!

My goodness! The poor guy. Does he have to take any special medications or anything?
Plants are amazing, Jen, but there are so many toxic ones. I’ve learned about a few more we have this year which are technically weeds. We have poison hemlock which keeps coming up all throughout the landscaping, but the cats steer clear of it luckily. It can literally kill a horse though! Animals seem to be pretty smart about what they need to stay away from, but it’s scary knowing we have these dangers all around us. Who would’ve ever thought lilies could be poisonous. Crazy!

The thing with lilies is they can ingest the tiniest amount of something unintentionally and still risk the liver damage. Yes, she takes a medicine every 12 hours, and she is the easiest cat to give medicine to. Well, I’ve had to easy cats because my Bailey was pretty darn easy too. But she knows the spot where we do the medicine, and it must not taste bad at all. Many times she goes to that spot and waits for me because she knows the routine. How lucky am I? ❤️

It’s scary! I forgot Harper is a female. Gosh, I can’t keep track of my own cats either. 😂 I hope you can forgive me. 😉 I’m so glad the medicine goes down well for both. That’s a blessing. Give them hugs for me, Jen! 😸❤️

Thanks, Tammy! It really is and I am not always the best at starting at the beginning, so I’m grateful that happened here.

Sounds fun, Jennifer! Are you going to continue with this series? I like that you noticed some character development of the protagonist, even in this first book, it bodes well for the rest of the series.
