Welcome to my stop on the blog tour celebrating the release of I Was Told It Would Get Easier by Abbi Waxman! Thank you to Berkley Publishing for the invitation!
I read and LOVED The Bookish Life of Nina Hill last year. Click for my review.
About the Book:
Squashed among a bus full of strangers, mother-daughter duo Jessica and Emily Burnstein watch their carefully mapped-out college tour devolve into a series of off-roading misadventures, from the USA Today bestselling author of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill.
Jessica and Emily Burnstein have very different ideas of how this college tour should go.
For Emily, it’s a preview of freedom, exploring the possibility of her new and more exciting future. Not that she’s sure she even wants to go to college, but let’s ignore that for now. And maybe the other kids on the tour will like her more than the ones at school. . . . They have to, right?
For Jessica, it’s a chance to bond with the daughter she seems to have lost. They used to be so close, but then Goldfish crackers and Play-Doh were no longer enough of a draw. She isn’t even sure if Emily likes her anymore. To be honest, Jessica isn’t sure she likes herself.
Together with a dozen strangers–and two familiar enemies–Jessica and Emily travel the East Coast, meeting up with family and old friends along the way. Surprises and secrets threaten their relationship and, in the end, change it forever.
My Thoughts:
After having loved quirky Nina Hill and her bookish life, I could not wait to see what Abbi Waxman brought us next in I Was Told It Would Get Easier.
Emily has her sights set on college when she and her mother, Jessica, schedule a big college tour all over the east coast.
Jessica is excited about the tour with her daughter, thinking they’ll have time to bond and reconnect before Emily leaves the nest. They have grown apart as often happens with teen daughters; friends becoming more important. Jessica turns inward, though. She’s unhappy with herself and doesn’t blame her daughter for not liking her much.
Emily has her own share of personal struggles. She feels like no one at school likes her, and she wonders if college will be more of the same.
I enjoyed this glimpse into mother-daughter relationships. Jessica and Emily insightful, and they share their innermost thoughts with the reader. I found the tour set-up entertaining, where they see different relatives and friends along the way, and Jessica’s wittiness kept me smiling.
Overall, I Was Told It Would Get Easier was a thoughtful, clever, feel-good read, and I’m ready to see what Waxman brings us next!
I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

This sounds like a great book. Reading the plot line and the character descriptions made me think of ‘Lady Bird’

I think you liked this better than I did! 😂 I put a few words together for a goodreads review but I decided not to write a blog review. I thought she did nail the subtle miscommunication cues between mothers and daughters! Mostly I was frustrated with very little plot. It also bothered me that she referenced killing yourself in attempts to be funny. Like “throw myself out the window” and “shoot myself” ….I realize these are common hyperbolic phrases but they started bugging me and seemed an insensitive use of language. Honestly, I was a little bored with the story and my mind starts looking for other ways to be engaged! I liked Nina Hill better!
BTW…. your posts are not showing up in my email or my reader… I have to remember to go look at your blog! What’s the best way to troubleshoot? I’m sure it’s a wordpress/bloglovin compatibility issue.

Aww, thanks, Carol. I understand. To me it was more character-driven, which is usually my preference with books lately. You must not be following me anymore? Sometimes WordPress does that to us. Check and see if it says that you are following in the bottom left hand corner, and if by chance you are, I would unfollow and then reflow and set your preferences back up again for email for my blog. I stopped the emails back when I first started blogging because I filled up my inbox too fast and I ended up finding that notifications work better for me. I have it set up that I have notification when you post. That helps me with my shares too because it’s super easy to click over and share. The only downside to notification is it only saves 100 so if you don’t visit in a day or two, some will roll off.

Oh thanks for the tips! It says I am following you, so maybe I’ll try unfollowing and following again! I’ll also investigate the notifications option. My inbox is crazy crazy full all the time and using WP reader works better for me.

The notifications come up in the reader, and it makes it super easy, especially if you check each day. You just click over. I couldn’t manage without them. ♥️

I always use reader. When I check reader it says I’m following you but I never see you there!

The reader can only show you so many blogs because of the number you follow. It picks and chooses what to highlight for you. The notifications are part of the reader, but you have to turn them on for each blog that you want. You have total control of your notifications.

Oh!!! I’ll make a list and turn on notifications for those blogs! I thought notifications meant I’d be getting more email!! Thanks!
