I am trying super hard not to buy books. Like most of us, I am out of space, so we even have books on our stairs! (They look quite pretty there! Maybe I’ll take a pic of that?). I am determined this time, so perhaps I won’t have hauls to share often. And let’s be honest…sometimes I’ll be too mortified to share. 😬 😂
When this particular box of books came in, I immediately noticed a trend. Every single purchase was enabled by a book friend: via Goodreads, blogs, or bookstagram. Because I like to give credit where credit is due, I am doling shout-outs to some of my amazing enablers. 😊
First, we’ll start with the elephant in the room, that giant Harry Potter illustrated book. I am the last person on the planet to read Harry Potter. I know you all cannot believe there is someone left! 👀 That would be me! I also have not seen the movies! Are you even more shocked? 😱
A dear Goodreads friend, LaDonna, has been reading and beautifully reviewing the illustrated HP books, and it was just the push I needed…and then, the very next day, Nikki, at Saturday Night Reader, posted her Saturday Spotlight of Harry Potter books at Barnes & Noble, with accompanying coupon code, I might add (huge enabler, that one!), so I had to do the same (that package with a box set of HP books is on the way). Thank you, LaDonna and Nikki! 🤗 I hope I love this series as much as everyone else! ♥️
Working our way up from the bottom, Monsoon Mansion was reviewed by a friend on Bookstagram, but for the life of me, I cannot find the post. I adore memoirs, and quite honestly, I could not resist the cover with a giant hibiscus flower (also included in my picture above!).
The Summer in Puglia is next-up, and it came highly recommended by two blogger friends, Fiction Fan’s review and Ann Marie at LitWitWineDine review. FictionFan even said she thought this book would be a perfect match for me, so extra enabling points for her! Thank you, FF and Ann Marie!
The Beekeeper was purchased due to this review The Beekeeper by my friend Paula at Book Jotter. Though difficult to read due to content, I can’t get enough of these harrowing literary nonfiction stories. Thanks, Paula!
Lastly, because I strive to be a well-rounded reader, as this one is a bit of a stretch for me, we have Scythe. It was Beth’s review of Thunderhead, the second in the series, that grabbed my attention. I had also seen other reviews of both books all over Goodreads and the blogosphere. Here’s Beth’s review of Scythe. Thank you, Beth!
I have bought several Kindle books recently thanks to enablers, and one of many was due to Nicole’s Go Home Afton Review at The Bookworm Drinketh. Also, friends like Susan and Carrie send me running to Netgalley for requests, as do my BB reading group ladies, Berit , Melisa ,Mack , and Holly. There are many more of out there, so if I didn’t tag you this time, I will be soon! 💗
In other news, on Netgalley, I was approved for two books this week (I am doing a slow-down on NG!): John Boyne’s A Ladder to the Sky and Kate DiCamillo’s Louisiana’s Way Home.
I also received an ARC from St. Martin’s Press of Daughter of Moloka’i and shared this image on my Bookstagram. I still need to read Moloka’i I purchased years ago. Let me know if you would like to join me!
I cannot wait to dig in to these books, but since I just admitted to you there are (unread) books on my actual stairs, it may take some time. 😂 Thanks to everyone, tagged or not, for their friendship and enabling! ♥️
Yay! Always looking out for my fellow reader 😉

As if we need enabling but it’s the best kind of friendship. You obviously have some really good book friends. It can’t be all bad…look how pretty!
FYI, my bookshelves are now two and three deep😏

Made me almost want to dig into Michner’s Hawaii… but 1000 pages is scary!

I have some Michener books, but I’ve been afraid of the commitment too! Have you read Honolulu by Brennert?

No, I haven’t read Honolulu, but I’ve seen it and been tempted.

Bookworms, we always put ourselves on book buying bans tjen break them immediately the moment we step inside a bookstore. But really, nothing bad about that, right? Greay posT, Jen!

So true, Rachel! I try not to do bans, just slow downs, because I have to be reasonable! And realistic! 😂 You have added to my wishlist, and I’ll always connect Charlotte’s story to your rec! ♥️

Happy to oblige. 😊 There are actually a handful of ARCs from Penguin available for download from Edelweiss. Annelies by David R. Gillham looks promising.

Rachel, it absolutely does, and I have it downloaded. I really hope I can fit it in somewhere because I would love to read that one soon. 😊

Enjoy your summer reading!

I’m still back and forth, too, Jacquie. The ease of the ebooks wins out often for me these days, but nothing beats holding a real book! Thank you, and I hope you have some great reads ahead too!

Jennifer! If it makes you feel better I have not read HP yet either and only saw one movie and I was so lost! And my kids watch them all so I own them all on video/DVD and they probably were on in my house many times when I was home, just never caught my attention…
Proud to be an enabler! And I do want a picture of those books on those stairs!😘

Next post will be on the stairs! 😂 That does make me feel better! Wonder why we are outliers? ♥️

Ooh, I do hope you enjoy That Summer in Puglia – I think you will! And thanks for the shout-out! 😀
I also think you’ll love Harry Potter. I read the books as an adult and only read the first one because I worked at a school at the time and it seemed to be making all the reluctant readers read, so I felt I ought to encourage them. But then I was hooked and by halfway through the series, I was queuing up with all the kids on publication day! (Though I didn’t dress up as Hermione, I hasten to add… 😉 )
LikeLiked by 1 person
Are you sure you didn’t dress up, FF? 😃 I’m really looking forward to both books am grateful you put Puglia on my radar. It’s not getting enough love! That is wonderful to know about Harry Potter too! Now I have to figure out when to start that one because I have a feeling I will want to read it from first to last asap. Happy to give you the shout out! You are one of my go-tos for keeping me well-rounded as a reader, and I appreciate it!

Aw, thank you! 😊 Yeah the HPs will suck you in but fortunately they’re real page turners so they don’t take quite as long as you’d think…

Ok, first let me inform you that no, you are not the last person out there not having read HP. Believe it or not I still haven’t picked them up myself basically at this point more because I’m afraid I’ll be nit picky after all the hype. They came out after my time in that age range and by the time I began picking up YA again I just have shied away, so again…. maybe someday. LOL
And I’ll always take the title of bad influence anyday, it’s nice to share the really great books with others and get them hooked too! 🙂

I’m so glad I’m not alone! Yes, you read much more YA now than I do, but I understand about kind of missing the trend because the same thing happened to me. I was too caught up in other life stuff at the time but I remember all the excitement! I look forward to your NG post every week or when you do them! 😊

Yes, exactly. And now I’ve heard so much of the plot it seems I won’t find it as exciting as everyone else and will be that one person who doesn’t oohh and ahh.

I’ve been waiting for it to go on sale for kindle and it finally did. I really look forward to reading it, it seems really cool based on all the reviews i’ve seen so far.
Hope you enjoy it as well 🙂

Ohhh! I wish I had seen the sale, Norrie! I was able to get this one for about $8 US, so not too bad for a new book. It does seem really cool and different. Yes, I hope we both love it! ♥️
