TGIF, everyone! First Line Fridays is a fun way to share from books on your TBR.
Today my first line is from a book I’ll be reading soon! I’m currently reading Moloka’i and am completely mesmerized!
1917
A wave of Kona storm clouds rolled across the jagged peaks of the Wai’anae Range, arriving in Honolulu with a cannonade of thunder and the kind of wind and rain Hawaiians Called lani-pa’ina, “crackling heavens.” In the harbor even the largest ships seesawed in their berths; one little steamer, the Claudine, barely made it into port by sunset, before the sundered clouds began to weep and rage.
Synopsis from Goodreads:
DAUGHTER OF MOLOKA′I is the highly anticipated sequel to Alan Brennert’s acclaimed book club favorite, and national bestseller, MOLOKA′I. It’s a companion tale that tells the story of Ruth, the daughter that Rachel Kalama—quarantined for most of her life at the isolated leprosy settlement of Kalaupapa—was forced to give up at birth.
The book follows young Ruth from her arrival at the Kapi’olani Home for Girls in Honolulu, to her adoption by a Japanese couple who raise her on a farm in California, her marriage and unjust internment at Manzanar Relocation Camp during World War II—and then, after the war, to the life-altering day when she receives a letter from a woman who says she is Ruth’s birth mother, Rachel.
DAUGHTER OF MOLOKA′I expands upon Ruth and Rachel’s 22-year relationship, only hinted at in MOLOKA′I. It’s a richly emotional tale of two women—different in some ways, similar in others—who never expected to meet, much less come to love, one another. And for Ruth it is a story of discovery, the unfolding of a past she knew nothing about. In prose that conjures up the beauty and history of both Hawaiian and Japanese cultures, it’s the powerful and poignant tale that readers of MOLOKA′I have been awaiting for fifteen years.
Please share with me the first line(s) of the book you are currently reading! I would love to read it! Have you read Daughter of Moloka’i, or do you plan to? Have you read Moloka’i, or any other books by Brennert? Happy Friday reading! ~ Jenni THR

Happy Friday, Jennifer! Sometimes, I think we tag team one another. 🙂 I have this book on my schedule to read next week.
My first line is :
“Long before we discovered that he had fathered two children by two different women, one in Drimoleague, and one in Clonakilty, Father James Monroe stood on the altar of the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, in the parish of Glenn, West Cork, and denounced my mother as a whore.”
from The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne.
I am in heaven reading this one once again!

These two books are amazing! I read the first one years ago, so I wish they were published closer together. Enjoy!!
My first line is: “The two girls, young women, met for the first time the day they moved in together, first semester of that first year of college, third floor of Banks Hall, a north-facing room that overlooked green lawns and treetops and streams of students coming and going on the walkways below.” (whew, long sentence! “The Current” by Tim Johnston
Happy Friday!

Such a beautiful cover! I still can’t believe they actually took people and made them live in isolation with leprosy. It’s just harrowing. I’ll add these for sure. 😉

Thanks, Hayley. I think so, too, and if the first book is any indication, the whole story will be a beautiful one. ♥️

Today on my blog, I’m sharing the first line from The Christmas Remedy by Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall. It’s a sweet little book if you haven’t read it yet. I’m currently starting The Seamstress by Allison Pittman, so I’ll share the first line from this book.
“My first and last memories are my cousin Laurette.”
I’m very excited to read this book!
Hope you have a great weekend filled with awesome reading time. 😀❤📚

I just bought Moloka’i on my Kindle because I’ve heard so much about this book. Despite Hawaii being one of my absolute favorite places ever, I can’t recall having read a single book with Hawaii as a setting. That is a failing that must be remedied!

Hmm…I’m blanking on if I’ve read any others, Myndi. That’s a good question! I hope you enjoy Moloka’i!
