About the Book:
Sharp Objects meets My Lovely Wife in this tightly drawn debut that peels back the layers of the most complicated of mother-daughter relationships…
For the first eighteen years of her life, Rose Gold Watts believed she was seriously ill. She was allergic to everything, used a wheelchair and practically lived at the hospital. Neighbors did all they could, holding fundraisers and offering shoulders to cry on, but no matter how many doctors, tests, or surgeries, no one could figure out what was wrong with Rose Gold.
Turns out her mom, Patty Watts, was just a really good liar.
After serving five years in prison, Patty gets out with nowhere to go and begs her daughter to take her in. The entire community is shocked when Rose Gold says yes.
Patty insists all she wants is to reconcile their differences. She says she’s forgiven Rose Gold for turning her in and testifying against her. But Rose Gold knows her mother. Patty Watts always settles a score.
Unfortunately for Patty, Rose Gold is no longer her weak little darling…
And she’s waited such a long time for her mother to come home.
Until I found out about this book, I hadn’t paid much attention to the case in the US where a mother with Munchausen by Proxy, feigning her daughter’s “illnesses” for over twenty years, was murdered. I have no idea how I missed that in the news, but wow.
Darling Rose Gold is not the same story, but in it, Rose Gold Watts’ mother, Patty, is guilty of the same behavior. Rose Gold has allergies, uses a wheelchair when she can walk, and is constantly being tested for this or that illness.
Patty serves time in prison, and when she gets out, Rose Gold takes her in; however, Rose Gold is no longer a meek lamb.
If you need likable characters, you definitely won’t find that here! I certainly felt for Rose Gold and how it shaped her into a complex, devious person. The storyline sucks you in right away, and it doesn’t let go. This was a book I devoured in less than half a day because I couldn’t put it down.
Darling Rose Gold kept me guessing, and I was along for the ride. It’s a dark and disturbing story of revenge, a true psychological thriller that keeps you thinking and analyzing. Hold on tight while you read this one!
I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
